Yay! Finally some worthwhile Bambi fanart. =)

Bambi has been one of my favourite Disney movies for as long as I can remember. When McDonalds came out with those disney plastic toys a long time ago my favourite one out of all of the toys I had was the Bambi figure. I'd play with it for hours and hours until I lost it one day at the ocean...

Anyway, my small homage to Bambi. I wish I could have done it better, but I guess this will do for now.

Ink outline coloured in Photoshop CS.

Edit 08/21/06: I just thought I'd cover my ass for fear of lancing and raving art theft finders...

This is how I drew this image. I was watching Bambi one night, paused it at this scene, and did a look-off of it from my TV screen onto paper. I didn't trace it. After doing that, I inked it, then scanned it, and worked on the background in photoshop, trying deliberately to make it look as close to the original scene as it looked on my TV screen as possible. That was, believe it or not, the intention. I'm not trying to copy Disney and claim it as my own intellectual work here; I tried, as hard as I could, to copy the Disney version as homage to the movie, but I am in no way claiming it as my own. I love Bambi. I love Disney. I would never in my wildest dreams try and make money off of selling something like this or try and gain fame by doing only this.

I tried to make it look as close to the original scene as possible because I believe this scene is one of the most beautiful Disney has ever done, and I wanted to draw attention to it. The sadness overwhelms me when I get to this point in the movie, and trying to capture that same sadness was something I wanted to try. Just for the record, I don't feel I've achieved it, but I hope I've stirred within you the want to see this movie again so you can experience it for yourself. Art is supposed to move you. This movie moved me, and I tried in vain to capture it, and maybe because of that you can call me an "art thief".

I don't have any malicious intent. I'm not trying to gain fame by copying someone better than me. That isn't the intention at all. It's a very unique exercise doing look-offs, and indeed I think the skill has helped me very much. When you do a look-off, copying pictures isn't the only thing that can come from it, indeed, it's a small insignificant part. Drawing from life, that is, with live models or still life or from photos I've taken myself, is infinitely easier, and I think I've become a better artist because I've tried to train my eye to translate what I see in the real world onto paper.

Like I said, I'm covering my ass, and I know it. I'm scared stiff of this new race of radicals who call the slightest resemblance to another image art theft. I don't believe this will sate anyone's appetite for my blood if they get a hold of me. I don't think I need to cover my ass, but the extent all this crusading has gotten to over the past year is incredibly frightening.

If you do ever have a problem with this image, I encourage you to please note me about it first. If, for some reason you do insist I take it down because it goes against your morals, then I will. Just don't form a hidden coalition behind my back to get me banned for this.

People know this is copied from the movie. Anyone who's ever seen Bambi will know that at first glance, I'm not getting away with anything. People aren't stupid enough to think this is mine and only mine.

Rant is over.

Bambi, the pose and everything else associated with it is © Disney
The Art is © Moi, ~rheall; that is, I drew it and coloured the background with my own hands, but I do not lay claim to the intellectual property at all. Just the work that went into reproducing it.

I thought this was an actual screenshot when I first saw it. I clicked on it to flame so that I could flame you for art theft.
But instead I found this beautiful ORIGINAL piece of artwork.
You really captured the emotion and style of one of the saddest scenes in Disney history. Amazing job on this. :D

Nicely done :)
As everyone else did before me, I thought it was a screenshot. Unfortunately I have not seen this movie in a long time. I always loved Disney when I was little and I still do. Some of the animals I draw still have some slight Disney qualities.
It's great that there are still people who appreciate the old and classic Disney movies.
Just curious though, have you read the book?

I can imagine a small Bambi plastic toy, floating along the ocean crests, being picked up by a small porpoise who clicks to his neighbor <<eh? what's this then?>> and they proceed to play with it.
What does happen to all the stuff we send out to sea? Something I could spend hours contemplating.
Anyways, great art. Bambi was my favorite movie until TLK came out.

I thought this WAS a screenshot at first! So cute, and sad... darn movie always makes me cry. "Mother? Mother?" *buries head*

Anyway, nicely done. The lack of tiny detail is good, appropriate to the look of the original.

How'd you do the snow? Looks good.

I used the airbrush in photoshop for the snow, then added the Film Grain filter over top to get the grainy effect of the old movie backgrounds. I had the movie paused at this scene, and I tried to duplicate it as closely as I could to the original.

Thank you very much; I always cry at this scene too, which is why I attempted to draw it. =) I'm glad you like it!
